Okay.
I've been promising you an update on James. It has been
nearly a year since the last one. First, let me say that
many good things have happened over the past 12 months.
However, total recovery was not one of them. In fact,
James recently had emergency surgery to save his life -- details
below.
One of the highlights came in October of last
year when James served as the visiting Pastor for First Baptist
Church in Timpson, TX. He preached both the morning and
evening service and did a wonderful job. I have some video
of it that I want to post in the future.
About that surgery: James had gotten to the
point that he could get himself around the house. Rick had
purchased a second van for James & Wanda which allowed James to
let himself in & out... and, potentially, to drive himself.
Rick & I took him out and let him drive in a parking lot on
night soon after we got the van. James loved it.
In addition to his water walking, he had begun
working with a therapist close to the house whom he really liked
and who seemed to be making progress. He had even started
coming into the office a few days each week to help us set up
our billing service. He was there for 6 hours the last
time that he came in.
It was on a Saturday evening in mid March, amid
this progress, that we noticed blood in the toilet and realized
that he was bleeding from his rectum. We took him to the
Emergency Room and they admitted him to ICU where they began
pumping blood into him. On Sunday, they gave him 7 units!
The following Tuesday, they decided to do
emergency surgery to remove the right half of his colon.
They were able to stem the bleeding and save the function of his
colon. They also removed his appendix while they were in
there.
He spent 10 days in ICU & another 4 in a regular
room before being transferred to an Acute Care Facility for 3
weeks. During his stay there, the family learned about
Carter's cancer (see
Carter's Cancer)
He then spent 3 weeks in an Acute Rehab Facility
before finally getting back home on June 5th. It was here
that the family celebrated Carter's 48th birthday 3 days before
his own surgery for throat cancer.
After returning home, James has been getting back
up to speed on his therapy, and he has even gone up to the
office. He is still weak, but continues to gain strength.
Please keep praying for James and sending him
encouraging emails. |
